All,
I have been kicking around some ideas for a Bonafide true beginners class. I used to run dirt track, and any of you familiar with how they divide their classes, will find the similarities.
1) heads-up racing on a 500 tree.
2) totally fabricated chassis w/ 102" to 108" wheel base
3) sheet metal body (will look a lot like a Funny-car when finished)
4) Spec rear tire (28-10.50)
5) 310 cu. in. disp. limit ALL FACTORY STOCK PARTS (500 buck engine claim)
....(When you claim an engine, the claimer forfiets their engine in running condition to the claimee)
6) Cast iron Vortec heads only.
7) max lift rule on camshaft (460 or so)
8) any rear suspension set-up
9) Factory automatic (powerglide,c-6,350 turbo,etc.) MANUALLY SHIFTED!
10) Any converter
11) HEI distributer ignition
12) No ABSOLUTELY NO electronics other than a tachometer
13) Spec car weight w/driver >2500lbs.
14) 650 mechanical holley
15) Spec alluminum intake...(Edlbrock, etc.)
This is just a few things I can think of right off hand...Any more ideas???
Anyone interested in pursuing this.......

No one interested yet huh.
How about including ANY vehicle meeting weight requirement (at say 2800lbs with driver), engine specs, transmission specs, no power adders,no electronics, tire specs.
All out, heads up, first one to the finish line wins.
There are a gazillion Mustangs, Camaros, etc. rotting in junkyards to fit this bill. There are a gazillion 305, 302, etc. just going to waste....That can all be had for next to nothing moneywise.
Am I missing the point. Has heads up racing died and nobody told me?
Would there be no fun/pride in being able to take vehicles regulated to perform equally and racing them to see who can prepare/drive them the absolute best on any given day?
Is this just a pipe-dream I'm having?
I believe that one thing, other than money, prohibiting people from entering the sport besides money is the belief (real or not) that you need to have a rocketship like Danny Hegler or Buddy Plyler drives just to compete on the ET level.
My personal opinion is that, for a beginners class, setting a fastest ET is not the way to go. You will have people back-pedaling rocketships and backing into someone who "runs the number".
C'mon everyone...Lets get a discussion going on how to design a class to run heads-up on the feet.
peaceout
