Well John and I started ripping the Mustang apart last night. We got started at 9:00 and quit at 1:00 Saturday morning. Here's a couple of before and after pics. All we have left to do is pull the dash out, the door panels off, drop the rear end (once we have the new one built), and drop the fuel tank, then we have to decide if this things going to be slow with Ford power or fast with a Small Block Chevy.:biggrin2:

Looks like you had a long night. I'm mostly a Chevy guy, but I really prefer to see Ford power in a Ford chassis. Take care. Tom Worthington.

I agree Tom, but one thing we all know is that it cost more to make a Ford run the same as a Chevrolet. I already have a spare Powerglide with a Slack or ATI Convertor, a fuel pump, a MSD 7-AL3 Ignition Box, distributor, coil, and an intake manifold. John has a 8.8 rear end that will fit with a spool and c-clip eliminators. We talked about the possibility of mini-tubbing it also. Really pumped up about this project. We still have alot of cleaning up to do and such, but it's nice to have a project to play around with.

Yanked the dash out today and cleaned up the engine bay a little bit. Silver from Farmington told me how to clean the engine bay up, and I have to say it worked really good, Oven Cleaner!!! Just about got it all stripped down now.

After about another 6 hours of work we got to this point. We removed all of the sound deadening material, which wasn't a fun task and cut a hole where the spare tire was, we're going to build a sheet metal piece that will be held in place with dzuz fasteners so we can remove it and adjust on the upper bars should we ever need to. Also got the front end removed since it was all a little dinged up. I believe we're going to go with 10 inch tires to help offset the cost of tubbing it. Since those Mustangs have a canted 4-Link setup from the factory, I doubt we'll have much of an issure with traction.

Looks good another 4 banger gets a new lease on life. As far as cost chevy vs ford. Its about the same now days if not the other way around. I have both and build both. But what ever works for you.
Dont forget to go in and weld up all of the factory suspension mounts there bad about pulling out. Good idea on the floor pan its a pain to get to mine.

Hank thanks for sharing the project info with us. It looks like you guys are really getting down to business. I know John will have a blast keeping the track hot with his new ride. I think you guys should look at the rules for "Performance Street" and built the car where you could campaign it in Modified Eliminator, Performance Street, 7.0 Index and Pro Tree Eliminator. But then again if you go Chevy power the only class you're eliminating is Performance Street. If you already have the GM power plant it might be easiest (most cost effective) to go in that direction.

I believe we have decided to not mini tub it. I have talked to a few folks that claim that you can go 5.0's if not 4.90's with some really good rear suspension. We'll never go that fast, but if they can hook, then we can hook running mid 6's to low 7's without a doubt. We haven't built the engine yet, but with the amount of spare Bowtie stuff I have, it will be way easier on the wallet. We also cut out the area for the subframe connectors, so I just need to head over to the local roundy round shop and see if they have the square tubes that we need. Mike, you aren't by anychance a UPR or AJE dealer are you?

Ya stock susp works real well i run low 6.40s with just control arms. 2X2 square tubing works well if you doing threw the floor subs.

Hank I'm a QA1 dealer. Maybe Kevin Robinson or Mike Sanders can point you in the right direction for the best deal on UPR and AJE.

Got a few more things done today. Cut the rest of the floor out and welded some subframe connectors in.

You can't see the quality of the welds, but my brother-in-law bought a new Hobart welder that is simply awsome. Looks like a bunch of dimes layed on top of each other.

Been about 2 months since my last post, but we got some more done today. The left front inner fender was rusted up pretty bad, looks like a battery leaked or exploded and pretty much ruined it, so we decided to cut it all out and weld in some 2X3 square tubbing. Here's some before and after pics.

Now we just have to get some metal and form it in and weld it up. After that we (more him than me) are going to weld all of the strut tower and inner fender holes up, smooth them and get them ready for paint. So far we are very pleased with the way our work had come out. Thanks
